Storyboarding OUDF404 Studio brief 1

As my ideas was coming together i thought i should start a story board in order to know what order the shots should go in and what camera angles would be needed. I started this by researching how to create storyboards.

A storyboard is a sequence of images presenting a story in motion, It is created using the main scenes to tell the story and present the camera angles. Storyboarding is widely known for being developed at the Walt Disney studios in the 1930's but may have been created earlier than that but the storyboards have been lost due to time passing. Diane Disney Miller has said that the first storyboard created was for the 3 little pigs in 1933.

Example

Walt Disney Storyboard

The advantages of using storyboards is that it allows you to know what scene is going to happen next and what is happening in the scene. This is especially useful when filming as you will have more understanding of what will happen.
There are many ways of creating a storyboard, the most common way is by pen or pencil. But if you don't like to draw you can also take photographs, use a computer by collecting images or you can even just cut out pictures from magazines. Storyboards can be very basic all they have to do is tell the story they don't have to be a masterpiece.

Example

I really like Tom Cranham's scoreboards as they are very detailed a present the story very well. Some the films he has storyboarded include; Jungle2Jungle, The River Wild, Gleaming The Cube, King Kong Lives and Maximum Overdrive.

Tom Cranham

After all this research I decided to do my storyboard;

1minute storyboard.
Animatic
In films they usually creative an animatic before filming in order to get the gist of what will happen. This is a series of images put together to see how the scene will look and feel. This allows animators/ directors to work out screenplay, camera positions, timing and shot list. Sometime storyboards are just animated with simple zooms and pans to show camera movement. Animatic are often used in advertisements and music videos.
Animatic is used in the Gorillaz Dirty Harry video. I really like hoe they have just created an extremely simple but affective animation.

To help me create my minute film i created a animatic only using the images from my storyboard together just to get and idea of the flow.

I wanted to make it very simple just so i can see how the shots would work next to each other.

Colleen Atwood OUDF404 Studio brief 2

Colleen Atwood is the costume designer for Alice in Wonderland.She ahas been nominated nine times for an academy award for Best costume design. and won awards for chicago in 2002, in 2006 Memoirs of a Geisha and Alice in wonderland in 2011. I extremely like her work as she is very eccentric and really gets what the director wants the cast to wear. I specially like the queen of hearts costume and the mad hatters costume. I wanted the milky bar kid to look really cowboy like but in the modern day life. Costume designs by Atwood;

Alice

Mad Hatter

Sweeney Todd,  Mrs Lovett

My role in OUDF404 Studio brief 2

My role meant that i had to find the main actor for the part of the Milky bar kid. I managed to find Stuart who was willing to take part. I then asked him if he had any of the costume we needed for the role, He had a leather waist coat, a cowboy hat, a blonde wig and the type of boots we needed so I made sure that this was the costume he would be wearing.
I also helped to plan out what we would do on the day of filming along side Sacha. We planned;

Monday- Planning, Scripting, organise props, actors, timing, risk assessment, reserve equipment, location, photographs reading for storyboarding.
Tuesday- Storyboarding, opening and end credit sequences, make props
Wednesday- Set up the equipment and film all day, Finish end credit sequence.
Thursday- Post production work
Friday- Post production work
Weekend- Finish off any blogging which hasn't been done.

Break down of Wednesday
9.00-9.30 collect equipment
9.30-10.30 set up and test lighting, adjust camera settings, clear set and place props
10.30-12 filming in the Students' Union area
12.30-1.30 filming in the Students' Union office
1.30-Onwards filming by the lift, on the stairs, inside the drawing room

The End credit sequence consisted of the milky bar wrappers with our names on them. I created these using photoshop.

Milky bar wrapper
This is the milky i used in order to create the credits. I had to do a little research first to find the milky bar font. This is what i found;

This one wouldn' t work as it was to rounded.

This one wouldn't work as it was very similar to the first one

This one wouldn't work as it wasn't rounded enough.

This was too bold.

This was too straight.
I then went onto looking at fonts on photoshop and found that the nestle sign was pain Helvetica, and i then found a very similar font to the milky bar sign which i only had to change a little. The font was Tekton pro, I had to add extra bits in order to thicken it out.
This is how i started:

I started off with the milky bar wrapper.

I covered the writing on the wrapper.
I typed in the last name of the person in the right font.

I thickened the writing.

I added shading on the milk.

I covered the the shading in order to create an outline.

I added the writing for the first name in the right font.

I added an outline for the writing.

I added a line at the top to make it look like the nestle logo.

I thickened the line.

I coloured in the line to make it as thick as the writing.

I added shading for the final picture to make it more 3d.
This took a lot of time and effort in order to do everyones name and to make them all look similar. I added a different credit for the additional cast as we didn't know all there names so i did this using the milky bar buttons package.
This is the package.

I covered the writing.

I added the writing.

I thickened the writing.

I added the outlines.

Studio brief 2 main idea OUDF404

Our main idea since being unable to do our original idea consists of an election for student president where there are two people running against each other. One of the people running is the milky bar kid who promises to give free milky bars forever. The milky bar kid wins the election but then later on in the year he realises he has no budget left for anything. He takes a look at his expenditure and sees he has spent all his budget on milky bars. All the students are angry at him as he has no more milky bars for them. They end up chasing the milky bar kid away. He hides away in a small room and eats the final milky bar he owns.

This is our script of what will happen and what shots will be taken:
The day and life of the Milky Bar Kid. (Guilt) - Extended Concept/Script/Shot list
1.1 First opening shot – University elections are taking place and we see two candidates battling out on their podiums (wide shot from the other side of the room)
1.2 Two candidates side-by-side glancing at each other trying to out do one and other (mid shot)
1.3 Milkybars are on me (side shot)
1.4 Throwing Milkybars (wide shot)
2.1 Walking proudly staring at posters (low angle shot)
2.2 Camera pans past the posters
3.1 Sat alone in the drawing room working alone (pans across face)
3.2 Walk out of room and goes down lift (camera follows him)
3.3 In the Students’ Union area he is looking at the finance charts where they have completely ran out of money and all the expenditures have been on Milkybars. (over the shoulder shot)
3.4 Face stressed (extreme close up)
4.1 People point towards him at the end of the lift (wide shot)
4.2 Scared face (close up)
4.3 He runs towards the stairs (wide shot)
4.4 Angry mob chases after him (back wide shot)
4.5 He gets to the top of the stairs (back shot to front view of the Milkybar kid)
4.6 Gets into the drawing room (the camera is already in the room and he walks towards it)
4.7 Sits in the corner scared (mid shot to close up of face)
4.8 Cup (close up)
4.9 Makes himself a cup of tea to calm himself down (mid shot view of him sitting on the chair)
4.10 Eats the milky bar (wide shot)

We all had our individual roles on set and off set. We ended up having an additional person to our crew James who was then in charge of sound and editing as he needed a part in the production.
These are the parts we each did;
Sacha- Director, Producer, Script writer, pre-production and assistant editor (colour correction).
Sara- Costume organiser, Cast organiser, Assistant producer and End credits.
Simon- Camera man, prop buying and initial concept work.
James- Editor, sound editor, On site health and Safety, Additional Casting director, Assistant director.

Sacha made the storyboard of what scenes will take place and where they will.
Starting scenes.

Milky bar kid realisation.

The chase.

End scenes.
These are what should happen in order, they also show the camera angles that should take place.
Before we could get down to filming me and Sacha went to take a risk assessment in order for us to use the location this is what was sent to the Health and safety officer.

Students filming in the Students’ Union area and the Students’ Union office.
Sacha  Frampton, Sara Gowthorpe & Simon Sturgeon
Duration:
Set up: 30 minutes
Filming: 1.5 hours

Equipment
Dado lights [with lead]
Slow Motion camera [with lead]
Tripod + XD Camera [no leads]

Information
The students will be filming scenes in the Students’ Union area and the office.
No other specific equipment is needed and there will be minimal risks associated with the scenes.
The students have asked if staff and students could be asked to use an alternative route to the smoking area for 5 minute intervals while they film. They will have 2 students to stand at each end of the area to speak to students.
Is this possible to do – as I have suggested they don’t ‘prevent’ students?

Starting OUDF404 studio brief 2

I am working with Sacha and Simon in this group project to create our piece. At first we decided to go with a chase idea, this consisted of a robbery and a milky bar. We thought about this loads and discussed who was doing what part in the video. Sacha created the storyboard, Simon was filming and I was going to Edit. We created the storyboard and script. We then went onto getting the place where we wanted to film, there was a big problem with this as it is private property and we are now unable to do this idea due to legal reasons.
Here are the pictures we took for our original idea:
Possible shot/ camera angles

Shot under bridge
Shot for running

Shop getting robbed

We put a lot of time into this idea that we only had a short amount of time to come up with another idea. We also didn't have much group time together which was also a problem as we couldn't collaborate with each other. Due to this me and Sacha tried to come up with an idea, storyboard it and script it as soon as possible and we let simon know what exactly was going to happen so he still had an idea. We carried on with the idea of using a milky bar but used t or guilt instead of a chase theme.
