Moving image analysis

I am going to be writing about two videos; Tony Kaye, Tested for the Unexpected and Anton Corbijn, Atmosphere by Joy Division. I will be pointing out the similarities with the films and contrasts.

Tested for the Unexpected
Tested for the unexpected is an advertisement about Dunlop tyres although it is very discreet on what is being sold. I believe it is aimed at an artistic audience as it has many twists and turns to it unlike normal commercials. There are warm, kind colours throughout the video which contrasts with the music used for the ad- Velvet Underground- Art house Band Psychedelic who have worked with Andy Warhol (Venus with furs). This could be metaphor to show that Dunlop tyres seize control of the road. The reason why it contrasts is due to the soundtrack being really creepy and dark however the colours are bright and in your face. The advertisement is very memorable as it confuses the audience allowing them to want to see more and figure out the meaning of the film. This commercial shows modernism throughout as it seems to be breaking all the rules of that era in regular commercials. The first time this was aired was November 1993, Tony Kaye added his twist to this advert to catch the audiences attention. He is incredibly good at creating these types of advertisement/ music videos/ movies. I personally enjoyed this video as I was shocked that you find out at the end that all it is about is Dunlop tyres.

Atmosphere by Joy Division
Anton Corbijn created this music video in 1988, it was made after Ian Curtis died. I believe that it is aimed at fans to remember his talent with music, a memorial. Although it could be seen as exploiting his death to some people. But I believe it is a pleasure to understand Ian Curtis' actions and emotions at the time of his death. The way the video was made was to look older than it actually is, as it is in black and white and still images have been used of Ian Curtis which couldn't have been help due to him being dead. It is also very grainy and simple which also makes you believe it is a lot older. I think that black and white was used to portray it is lifeless like Curtis. But it could also represent That the band took themselves seriously. The actors in it are dressed as monks this perhaps could represent a funeral or religious beliefs. The lighting is very natural probably to represent life as a normal day. The video works very well with the music as they have put the images of Joy Division in time with the beat as well as the actors are also walking in time with the beat. The music is very dark and miserable but Joy Division was known for that style of music, Anton Corbijn seemed to have created this video to go extremely well with the song. I don't believe much technology was used in the making of the video as it is very simplistic.

Comparison and Contrast
Both videos have there good and bad qualities but the one that caught my eye most was Tested for the Unexpected as it is very colorful and unusual whereas Atmosphere is quite plain and simple. Also Tested for the Unexpected looks like it has more production value due to the modernism used throughout when Atmosphere looks very dated and out of fashion. It's clear that I prefer to see the more abstract and modern videos which is why I enjoyed Tested for the Unexpected.

Different camera angles

Zoom In and Out.

This is to change the magnification of an image very smoothly. With camcorders you can get a close up image when stood far away, this can also affect the audiences views very quickly. This is great for when you are trying to get a close up of facial expressions and also to get a distant shot of body language.

Zoomed out

Zoomed in shot
Point Of View (POV)

This is used to show what the character is looking at, so it's seeing things through their eyes. This can be also an over the shoulder shot. This can enhance drama within a scene of can see other characters reactions with the over the shoulder technique.

Point of View shot

Over the Shoulder shot

Long shot and Close up

long shot pictures can be very far away or not so far away, this is to get the whole scene in or if its a landscape. A close up shot can be a lot closer than the one using zoom this is to get certain facial features. When the long shot is very far away it is said to be extreme long shot, the long shot where it is not as far away is referred as life size. The close is is said to be an extreme close up and concentrates more on the face and tends to have very little background.

Extreme Close Up

Extreme Long Shot

Pans and Tilts.

Pans is when you scan the scene vertically and tilts is very similar but horizontal. The camera is placed on a tripod and scans the scene that way.

Tilt shot

Oblique and Canted angle

This is where the camera is not placed horizontally, it is placed at an angle facing the subject. This is most commonly used in horror movies to create a dramatic feeling. This camera angle is also used when the camera becomes someones eyes.

Oblique/ canted angle
Low Angle

A low angle is where the camera looks up to the subject, this suggests to the audience that the actors are tall. This helps to create a atmosphere of power, and makes the audience seem powerless to the subject on screen. The actor on screen will seem dominating to the audience.

Low angle
High Angle

The camera is raised over the subject to give a general view of the action. This isn't quite as high as a birds eye view. High angle make the subject smaller, has less power in the scene.

High Angle

Birds Eye View

This shot is very high up so you can not see as much detail, you can just get the gist of the scene. This makes the audience feel powerful as they are seeing from a god like view.

Birds Eye view

Dolly shots

Dolly shots are created using a tracking system where the camera is placed on a dolly whilst filming. This can also be referred as Tracking shots. This can be used when the camera needs to follow the object in the frame.

Mary and Max (OUDF403)

Mary and Max is an Australian clay animation. It is based on pen pals who write to each other for years. This film has won the Annecy crystal award in 2009 and was the best animated feature at the Asian pacific screen awards also in 2009. According to the credits and research I have done this film is based on a true story.

The reason why it love this film so much is the way that it is made as it is a claymation which is incredibly difficult to create but they have made it look absolutely easy with the facial expressions and movements of each character. The characters move so fluently and effortlessly.

As you can see Gaser uses a specific style which appears very sketchy but looks great as he has included more details. He uses mainly bright colors but he does differentiate with darker colour but I guess that does depend on what he is working on.

This is where I found a lot of his great doodle works.

Corpse Bride (OUDF403)

Corpse Bride is one of my favourite animations. It is based on a young man (Victor Van Dort) voiced by Johnny Depp. Victor is due to get married to Victoria Everglot until he gets trapped in an accidental marriage with the Corpse Bride when practicing his vows. Corpse Bride (Emily) was murdered years ago when meeting her lover. Emily takes Victor down to the land of the dead, Victor becomes overwhelmed by what he witnesses but Emily is extremely excited about her new marriage to notice. Victor is really desperate to get back to Victoria so he tricks Emily to take him back to the living. When she gets there he leave Emily in the woods to sneak off and see Victoria. Emily finds out and drags him to the dead. Victoria parents are desperate for her to get married to get them out of the money problems there family are in, they arrange her to be married to another man, which is the man who murdered Emily. Victor says To Emily that they should be married properly so they go to the living land to have a  proper wedding in the church, this is the where everyone shows up and find out who murdered Emily and then Emily tells Victor to marry Victoria. Emily takes her murderer down to the land of the dead forever.

Corpse Bride was created in 2005,using armature stop motion. The makers made a crank system in order to create facial emotions. The reason as to why this is one of my favourite animations is because it shows a lot of attention to detail. I also love the style as it's not a normal children's animation its darker animation. This helps it to appeal to adults as well as children.

Feagels home Studio brief 4 (OUDF403)

Feagels home is in the woods near a village/ town so he doesn't have to travel far for food. He lives in a cave in order to hide away from other predators hunting for him. His cave isn't very homey as he spends most of his time outside hunting.

Here are some of my ideas.

Outside ideas and Birds eye view

Colour Ideas

A long shot view

An inside view
The main ideas are that it is based in a cave that is hidden either in a cliff or woods but I prefer the woods idea more as it can be closer to a town. The colors that I wish to use are really dark and gloomy such as dark browns and grays.

Feagel my character- studio brief 1 (OUDF403)

I have put all my images together to create a final character. The reason i have used a Eagles head is because they have very good eyesight and there beaks are great for a predator hunting its prey. I have used a fish tail as i want my creature to be good in water as well as land. The wings are slightly different to an eagles as i want them to be stronger against any enemies so they have a harder skin.

My character in a t-pose and the tails at different angles.

During Movement
I have chosen bright colours for my character as i believe it suits him more if he was brighter. It also helps to back the backstory up as he has mutated.

My character at a side pose with colour.
I have added some colour to the background to make him seem out doors.

Character development Studio brief 1 (OUDF403)

I have collected images to create a collage of the what my character may look like. There are certain parts of animal that I take more interest in than others. The main animals the I use are Eagles, fish and lizards. This is because I believe eagles have a natural hunting instincts and fish have great eyesight.

Body Parts

Close ups.
I have also drawn body parts to see what would piece together best.

Proforma
My character is a mythical creature who is half Eagle half Fish. Which is why I named it Feagle, my character is very cautious, mysterious, he's impulsive and defensive as a last resort. His mother was hunted by humans when he was incredibly young which has made him very cautious. It has been so long since one of these creature was encountered that people believe it to be a mythical. Those who do believe hunt them for trophy purposes or to learn more about them. Feagle hasn't had much education but through many years he has learnt to be cautious and taught himself the skills needed to survive. His prey tends to be quite small such as fish and shrimps. He prefers to be out at night and loves to watch the sun rise. He lives in a cave filled with water to drink and swim in when need, the cave is well hidden in a wooded area. He used to be affectionate, playful and loving until his mother was murdered. He dislikes humans and confrontation.
