How To Make A Crate (part1)

This blog is going to show you how to make a crate using a polygon cube, extruding and UV mapping for textures and bump maps.

Firstly you start by creating a polygon cube at a size of 1,1,1 and translate 0,0,0.

Then you select all the faces, click the edit mesh window uncheck the keep faces together and the select extrude. Click one of the resizer handles slightly, then click the middle one which should turn yellow and try to resize it so that you get a smaller box within a box, like a margin.

After that you then reselected the middle squares on all the faces and extrude again but this time click the move handle that is blue and push it inwards to crate a nice border.

Once you have finished that you open the UV texture editor window by clicking window then you will find it.

Now we need to create the appropiate UV map in order to add the texture. Go into the front view and select the top and bottom faces you may end up having some side faces in but you can ajust that but going back into the perspective view to deselect them.
You should get something like this;

Then you select create UV at the top of the screen and press planar mapping.

Once you have done that you need to select individual shells as you have two one for the top and one for the bottom which are on top of each other. To do this you go to select menu on UV texture editor and press select shell. You are then able to move one shell at a time and place them in there appropiate place. If you have a problem in keeping the movement handles up right click and select UV and it should bring it back up.
After that you do the same to the rest of the faces ensuring you get the right amount of sides for your cube.
You should have a UV map like this.
