The Sound department

  • The boom operator usually manages both jobs.
  • Supervising Editor.
2. Post Production

3. Final Mix

  • Re-recording mixer - Finds a way to draw attention from bad recordings.
In an indie setting usually consists of 1 or 2 people in charge of all of these jobs.
Location Scouting- To find appropriate sounds.

  1. Is the location ideal for shooting?
  2. What equipment is required for optimal results?
  3. How to position themselves to capture the cleanest audio possible.
Sound should be everyone's concern.
Removing frequencies doesn't always work - the different sounds can share common frequencies.
Relationships with other departments - They rely on all departments to produce the appropriate sounds.

10 things you can do to increase the quality of your recordings;

  1. Turn off all mechanical and electrical devices.
  2. Shut all windows and doors.
  3. Scout for quiet times at your location.
  4. Lock it up, No talking.
  5. Allow the boom operator and mixer into rehearsals
  6. Test Recording.
  7. Capture wild lines.
  8. Crew needs to minimize movement and impact.
  9.  Pay attention for noisy props.
  10. Always leave time for room tone.
This is ideal but not always the case when making a film.
